Good overview of a very common discussion. I'm a data point of one but re the "commercial best case", I have often analyzed sites that use pagination for articles as a way to increase page views and found that the extra impressions you get & the seo benefit you get are minimal compared to the SEO & usability benefits you get if you put everything on a single page per your recommendations. In my experience the only time pagination really works well is if you take the time to make each page's meta info and content focus different. This requires a lot of effort so I haven't found many publishers willing to go this route.
